Design An Eclectic Bookshelf Fit For A Magic Cottage

I love a home that has a witchy cottage aesthetic. But when it came to designing my own home I realized that even though I could picture what I wanted it to look like, I had no idea where to start. So, one day when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed I decided to take a break and grab a good book to read, and thats when it struck me! A witchy bookshelf was the perfect place to start. So, I immediately headed to the internet to find some cozy cottage bookshelf inspo. Here were the pictures that got my creative juices flowing:

Okay, so now that you’re with me, I’ll show you all the pieces you need to create this cottage bookshelf vibe in your own home.

Eclectic Bookshelves Made of Wood

Of course, the first thing you need to create a cottage witch bookshelf is a bookshelf. For this aesthetic, it needs to be made of natural wood. The more detailed/unique looking, the better. Now, some of the more detailed shelves are more expensive, which is why I have included a mix of pricier hand-carved items as well as pieces that are significantly less money. The cheaper options may not be as elaborate or unique, but they will still give you the look you are going for.

Herb Jars and Apothecary Jars

The first thing I knew I needed on this bookshelf was some witchy jars. We all keep herbs in our houses, so why not make them look aesthetically pleasing? I love the look of herb jars on an open bookshelf and love it even more if the jars are unique and whimsical. Here are some of my favorite herb jars:

Antique Books

What would a bookshelf be without books? The next step is adding in some antique vintage books. Of course, you can use some of your own books on the shelf — it should be a practical bookshelf after all, but adding even just a few vintage books will really give it that witchy bookshelf feel. You might be wondering how the heck you will find vintage books. Thankfully, there are Etsy sellers who will do the hard work for you for a great price.

Bookshelf Plants

What is a cottage witch home without some nature creeping in? Having fresh potted plants on the bookshelf adds a certain earth magic feel to both the bookshelf and the room. I think the best type of plants for bookshelves are vines/crawling plants. They really give off that nature gone wild vibe, which is perfect for this aesthetic. I have included below a live ivy plant that you can actually order online and have shipped to your home.

This same site also offers plant bundles which are a great option if you are looking to add more varieties of potted plants on and around your bookshelf. No such thing as too many houseplants I always say…

Bookshelf Knick Knacks

Finally, we need to fill up all the other empty space on the shelves (and even the not-so-empty space) with cool trinkets, kick knacks, and eclectic dishes. I think antique tea sets, odd little containers, and other unique-looking items all add to the cottage aesthetic.

There are so many fun accessories you can add to your bookshelf to make it your own, the above are just the beginning.
